In German sentences the Direct Object is in the accusative case. You need to ask the right questions to find out which phrase in a sentence is the Object. Look at the sentence below:

Ich spiele Tennis.

To analyse a sentence you first need to look for the verb. In this case it is spiele. Then you need to ask the right questions...

    • Answer: Ich spiele. Therefore Ich is the subject of the sentence.

  • Then you include the subject into your next question to find the Object: Ich spiele who or what?

    • Answer: Ich spiele Tennis. Therefore Tennis is the object of the sentence.
