The Good News
CAFOD is a Christian organisation and its work is always based
on the way of life that Jesus taught us. A part of the Gospel which is particularly
important to CAFOD is when Jesus speaks about how we can love him even in the people we do
not know.
"I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a
stranger and you welcomed me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you
took care of me, in prison and you visited me."
Some people were puzzled when Jesus said this; how could they
help Jesus if they had never actually met him?
But Jesus replied, "I tell you, whenever you helped one of these
least important ones you helped me." (Matthew 25)
So let's begin...
Think about the things that we could do to help build
a better place for everyone. One thing that might work is HARAMBEE - this is a word used
in Kenya which means pulling together.
Can you remember any time at home or school when you have had to
pull together to do something?
What else do you think could improve life?
You might like to discuss with your teacher/parent.
Why are some people hungry? Why are some countries so poor?
Action ideas
When doing action to help the people who live in the countries
of the South we should make a big effort to think about those that we want to help, and
always remember the idea of working together.
Here are just a few suggestions of action ideas:
1. The Water Challenge
We have seen from the story about water how difficult life
must be for those people who do not have running water in their homes but have to walk a
long way to collect it.
Try to experience what this must be like by carrying a
bucket of water a few times around the playground; you'll be surprised at how heavy a
bucket of water really is.
How many times would you have to go around the playground to
walk a mile? Try and guess the weight of the bucket. Perhaps somebody might like to
sponsor you for the number of laps of the playground you can do, carrying the water.
Why not water the school's plants with the water you have
used?
2. What can we GIVE UP on Fridays?
Try giving up something that you like on Fridays. It may be
some sweets or a packet of crisps. When doing this, think of those who do not have enough
to eat. You may wish to give the money you save to CAFOD.
3. Prepare some simple prayers for people who are in need.
4. Why not organise an EXHIBITION of your work to share with
others what you have learnt?
They might like to make a contribution.
If you like these ideas, why not discuss them
with an adult and see if you can try them out?
Can you think of any other ideas of your own?
GOOD LUCK!
