Diocese of Portsmouth News

A new covenant with the poor

Bishop Crispian said in his Lenten Pastoral Letter that "the poor should always have pride of place in everything we do". The signing of the New Covenant with the Poor both on behalf of the Diocese by the Bishop and on behalf of parishes by priests and people on Pentecost Sunday will be a concrete sign that we as a Church take seriously the Pope's call for a "preferential option for the poor and outcast" as we approach the Millennium Jubilee. This will be a positive sign not only to secular society but also a sign of hope to the poor here and overseas. It is, in one sense, only the beginning. There will still be much to be done in bringing to realisation the three parts of the covenant on behalf of the poor: - Wealth sharing - Prayer and celebration - Advocacy and campaigning. The regional team at CAFOD South is here to support you in any way we can. We would also be glad to hear from people with copies of their Parish Covenants and any ideas, great or small, for making the Covenant a reality in the life of their parish.
