CAFOD IN ENGLAND AND WALES
CAFOD's full-time staff are there to serve the needs of our partners
overseas and those of our supporters here at home. They act as stewards of the money which
the Catholic community of England and Wales raise in various ways each year, especially
through CAFOD Fast Days and also through groups, Working in Partnership, Friday
self-denial, individual donations and many unusual sponsored events, coffee mornings,
hunger lunches, international evenings and more. But that isn't the whole story, because
one crucial element of CAFOD's work is the...
Development Education Programme
This part of CAFOD's work is to help us:
To understand
the causes of poverty and injustice.
To find out
what we can do about it.
Every two or three years a special campaign is launched. It aims to focus
attention on specific issues which help us to understand better some of the reasons which
lie behind poverty and injustice in the world and our involvement in them.
When we look at these in the light of our own experience and the
teachings of the Church we can consider what ACTION we should take to remove the
constraints which stop people fulfilling their basic needs and developing themselves.
Share in CAFOD's mission to promote human
development and social justice in the world by learning more about our brothers and
sisters in the developing world and working for change.
Help CAFOD by fund raising...

Have you ever asked yourself...
WHO are the people in need?
WHY are they in need?
WHAT can be done?
WHAT does our being CHRISTIAN have to do with it?
CAFOD's education work linking with the National Curriculum and the
National RE Project helps us with:
Sharing the
experience of the needy
Analysing
the causes of poverty and injustice
Reflecting
on scripture and church teaching
Taking
appropriate action
What kind of action?
Taking action yourself shows that you are serious about being on the side
of people in need. What action you take depends on the kind of person you are, what kind
of friends you have and what the possibilities are in your area and school. CAFOD produces
videos, posters and study guides for groups on a number of themes and there are also
resource packs for schools and youth groups on development issues. Education materials
contain lots of ideas, many of which fall into these four areas:
AWARENESS RAISING
e.g. Educating yourself and others through theatre, drama, exhibitions
LIFESTYLE
e.g. Examining what we eat, what we wear
CELEBRATION
e.g. Organising special vigils or services
ACTION
e.g. Buying fairly traded goods, writing to your MP, setting up a Traidcraft stall
