No. I want to see a British republic. Just like the other English republican ,Thom Paine, I think that the concept of a monarchy is insulting to the ability of people to run their lives, and a justification of privilege. Some people here want a socialist republic, others would be happy with a conventional republic such as france or the USA. I don't mind which! I'm very disappointed with the way the vote went in Australia. I dont understand why they didnt like the TYPE of republic on offer. In fact, to have the presidency chosen by the parliament is better than by direct election. The case of GOUGH WHITLAM in the 1970s proves how important it is for Australia to become a republic. In debate, always remember that monarchists are opposed to the right of people to govern themselves. They want to put a happy face on exploitation, wealth and privilege. Dont believe the myth that kings are a safeguard aginst fascism and dictatorships. In Spain, Japan, Italy and other countries, kings have always been the friends of dictators. Did you know that Edward VIII was forced from the throne not so much because of Wallace Simpson, but because he was a friend of Hitler ? (!) It's true. Good luck with your debate. Vive La Republique!
