Martin Luther King
Dr Martin Luther
King was an American Baptist minister. He was dedicated to trying to change the way that
black people were treated in America. They earned half as much as white people; many were
not allowed to vote; they were not allowed into certain public places that were reserved
for whites only. Despite many death threats he organized campaigns, boycotts, marches and
other forms of peaceful protest to bring justice for the black people of America. In 1965
equal voting rights were given to the black people. In 1968, when he was only 39, lie was
assassinated. His life and his vision of a peaceful and fairer world have become an
inspiration for oppressed people all over the world. In a speech he once said,
'I have a dream that one day all God's children, blacks, whites,
Jews Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands anti sing in the
words of the black people's old song, Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, we
are free at last'.
