  1. Why do you think the person’s parents acted as they did? Were they right to do so?
  2. What words would you use to describe the feelings between the writer and the ‘rough’ children?
  3. Who do you think you are most like - the person writing the poem, or the children?
  4. Do you think the person writing the poem is male or female? Say why you take your point of view.
  5. Do you think it is ever right for a parent to tell young people not to become friends with someone? What would be a good reason?
  6. Think of a title for the poem that sums up what it means.

Write a Poem

Write a poem based on your reading of this poem. Here are some ideas:

You are one of the rough children - say what you thought of this girl/boy.

Think of a time when you found it hard to make friends.

Think of someone you know who is bullied or gets left out.

Imagine a situation like that of the person in the poem.
