Year 7 Vocation and Sanctity

There are six units of work here, but Unit 5 itself comprises up to eight lessons. The indications for work here span, therefore 3-4 weeks.

These are offered as no more than outlines of possible content and lesson ideas. PW

1. Idea of vocation

Aim to consider the meaning of vocation, commitment and sanctity

to establish links with earlier work, especially on the Mass

to consider how people suffered for their beliefs: especially the Mass

Resources

Love one Another p177 story of persecuted Catholics

Method/Activity Ideas

Discuss how Christians have always suffered persecution

Broaden picture by mention of other situations (e.g. early Church)

widen discussion to consider how individuals may be mocked for belief, going to Church etc.

Written work: Letter from persecuted person about the situation they were/are in.

2. Vocation: Ten Commandments

Aim to consider what the basis is of vocation, commitment and sanctity - how do we know what is right?

To study and learn the Ten Commandments

Resources

Web CSP2 p42 (nb the protestant version!)

Show us the Way (p75) - not very accessible

(there’s also material in Contemporary Moral Issues and GCSE books: may help with ideas)

Method/Activity Ideas

Brief activity could establish the importance of rules

e.g. What would happen if there were no school rules?

If you and friends were on desert island what rules would you need?

Lead on to activities to consider the rules given by God (nb not made up by people)

Web provides material to consider meanings

Which is the most/least important and why?

Opportunities for display in books or on paper.

Could be set to be learnt for test.

3. Vocation: Twofold Commandment

Aim to consider the ‘higher law’ of Jesus’ The Twofold commandment

to introduce the concept of altruism as a way of serving God and neighbour - idea of going beyond the law to serve in Love

to reflect upon the meaning of the parables of the Good Samaritan

Resources

Bibles

Web CSP 2 pp46-50

Other possibilities: Jesus, Jesus and the Birth of the Church

Method/Activity Ideas

Refer to last lesson - bring out idea of just keeping the rules (legalism) (cf. Web CCVp46)

Search for word or phrase to sum up to describe God’s law

Idea: able pupils could review the Ten commandments

Lead on to idea that rule-keeping is no good unless there is a proper attitude (i.e. LOVE)

Possible texts for exploring this principle are

    1. Twofold Command (Web CCV p47)
    2. Good Samaritan (Jesus, Jesus and the Birth of the Church)
    3. 1 Co 13 (Web CCV2 p49)

Opportunities for further (complementary) display work.

Good Samaritan Board Game (tells the story)

Love is … poster

1 Co 13, write the passage on page 49 of Web, replacing love with own name - is this correct?

4. Vocation: The Rich Young Man

Aim to explore further the Christian call to commitment

to examine the motives and motivation of the Rich Young Man

to consider what full Christian commitment means

to understand that Sanctity involves more than just rule keeping.

Resources

Mark 10:17-22 Rich Young Man

Method/Activity Idea

Empathy: Why did the young man approach Jesus?

How did he feel when given the answer?

Why couldn’t he follow?

possibilities of discussion in class or in groups

Writing: Letter or Diary of the Rich young man

need to get over idea that not wealth the problem, but the attachment to them. This could possibly be done by putting some imaginary scenarios and asking how Jesus would have dealt with them
any other ideas

Perhaps 4 could be done before 5, and the material rearranged accordingly, so that the Good Samaritan is someone who did what the Rich Young Man wouldn’t.

5. Lives of Saints

This section could be a series of lessons

Aim to consider Christian vocation and sanctity in the Life of individual saints

to reflect upon these arising from individual lives

to understand that sanctity, though a high ideal, can be and is attained.
