Activities

Introduction

Introduce programme, range of topic.

Introduce lesson on adolescence as beginning of topic.

Recall work done at beginning of year on adolescence.

Ask questions or introduce discussion:

What is adolescence?

What is puberty?

What are main changes in adolescence?

Relationships in Adolescence

Move onto consideration of relationships in adolescence.

Who do you get on best with? Who do you often have arguments with?

Consider the contrast between relationships with parents and with friends.

(as the next lesson is about friendship, it is probably best to concentrate on parents here)

Activity Alternatives

Probably only time for one in a lesson.

  1. Role Play
ideas in flep 2 p16. Five role plays. Set up groups to do the role play. Perform for class. Discuss.
  2. Writing 1: Questions
flep2 p14 could be adapted to worksheet or OHP (suitable for quiet/cover lesson)
Writing could follow from, or lead into discussion.
  3. Writing 2: Reflection on stories
several possibilities, stories in Show us the Way (mostly peer pressure) and flep2 p15-16
  4. Discussion, Writing and Display: Rights of the Adolescent
Discuss what pupils are and are not allowed to do. What is fair and what isn’t?
Pupils work in small groups to devise and display the Rights of the Adolescent, saying what they should be allowed to do. (suitable for B band?)
    Variation: 10 commandments for parents
  5. Writing: the Contract
Probably best for more able. Move from discussion of conflicts with parents to idea of contract. Pupils design a contract that parents and adolescents must sign - mutual agreement. Report back at end of lesson.

Arranged marriages

Read ‘Aneeta’s story’ (Time to Live p280) or ‘Quasim and Surriya’ (Web CCV3 p68).

The topic could be approached in a variety of ways:

disccusion or writing: list, and discuss advantages and disadvantages of arranged marriage.
role play: interview Aneeta or muslim couple about arranged marriages.
role play or letter writing: parent-child or friend-friend about arranged marriages.

Use the activities or discussion to bring out what is important in a marriage and the nature of relationships, rather than allow this to become critical of asian (or other) culture.
