Discipline

All children who attend this school are expected to behave in a courteous and responsible manner. They will be encouraged to respect each other, the adults in school and every aspect of the school property.

The school's aim is to develop self confident, caring children who value themselves and others and who have strong Christian commitments. They are members of the Christian community and family of God. It is expected that parents will share the school's desire to create a calm and caring environment, in which children can develop and learn. We hope they will share and support the school's belief in courtesy and respect for others.

It is the belief at St. Giles' that every child is entitled to a day at school which is free from disruption and the above aims will be promoted by the following strategies:-

A system of rewards

Children will be praised, for example, for good and supportive behaviour both in and out of the classroom. This good practice will be used as an example and incentive to all the children in the school. A housepoint system applies in school. Points are awarded throughout the week for effort, achievement and good behaviour. Points may also be deducted where appropriate. These results are announced each Friday in whole school assembly. Also on a weekly basis, awards are given in each class for good behaviour and effort. Always the intention is to praise good practice and to highlight this to all the pupils rather than a negative outlook. The proportion of time spent praising should always outweigh negative messages.

A system of sanctions

Children will sometimes behave in a thoughtless, anti-social or reckless manner, and corrective measures will need to be applied. This will mean initially a withdrawal of privileges, leading to a daily report or detention as may be thought necessary by the school. This could lead to the ultimate sanction of exclusion - either temporarily or permanently. During all this period, parents will be kept continually informed and involved in discussions and the impositions of sanctions which will take place at the earliest possible moment.

School Rules

There is a Code of Discipline at St. Giles' which is kept for reference in school, and parents may inspect this at any reasonable time. This concerns the school rules on punctuality, movement around the school, care of school property, dress, attitude to learning and other matters.

Punctuality is of great importance and parents are asked to see that their children are brought to, and collected from, school at the proper times. In the event of absence, parents are asked to contact the school as soon as possible (by telephone if possible) or to send in a letter on the child's return to school.

The rules are few and mainly concerned with Health and Safety. They will be explained to the children by their Class Teacher.

In the case of bad weather when school closes early, every effort will be made to allow children home early but no child will be allowed home without an adult unless we have written permission.

When school remains closed because of severe overnight weather or heating failure this fact will be broadcast on local radio. Families should check the arrangements for the day before leaving their children.
