Facilities
St. Giles was founded during the 19th century and the original building is
a magnificent memorial to the parishioners and benefactors of that era.
There are seven teaching areas in the school. the top four are housed in
the original part, two on each floor, whilst a modern Infants Block comprises three
teaching rooms. The older classrooms are compact, very warm and have had improved
facilities. The newer classrooms are carpeted. All the classrooms are bright with
children's work displayed throughout the school.
There is an assembly Hall for gymnastics, music, drama, games and daily
worship in assembly. the school kitchen serves hot meals daily cooked by an experienced
and enthusiastic team of caterers.
recently, the second of three buidling improvements has been completed.
Phase 1 was the construction of a new toilet block. Phase 2 was a new entrance and offices
on the ground floor. Phase 3 will be a refurbishment of the four older classrooms and new
access corridors. This is quite an exciting period in the school's development.
Repair and maintenance work is carried out as required. We recieve a grant
for all exterior work, but as a Voluntary Aided School we must raise 15% of each bill.
Recent activity includes work on the schools historic bell Tower, known as "Pugin's
Nightcap".
The Parish "Connelly room" is a converted mobile classroom and
is also used at various times, thanks to the co-operation of the parish. our Early Years
group meets in this room on a daily basis.
St. Giles' is situated in the centre of Cheadle and from the town's Market
Cross the school can be sen alongside the Church, "Pugin's Gem".
At the rear of the school is a large grassed area for games and
recreation. A Conservation Garden offers scientific and observation work in practical
projects. a huge tree planting project has enhanced the grounds and recently the Town
Council opened up our own allotment where each class can experiment in growing flowers and
produce. A Marian Garden, dedicated to Our Lady, is a quiet area of school where outdoor
assemblies and services are regularly held.
The facilities at the South Moorlands Leisure Centre are used for weekly
swimming sessions where fully qualified staff support our own teachers. The Centre is used
for other activities too, as is Painsley R.C. High School, for indoor and outdoor
activities.
The Sports Field at our neighbouring school, Cheadle Primary, is shared
and used extensively. it is without doubt the best outdoor facility in the district. |
