School History
"The school is roofed and looking exceedingly well, it will be
light and spacious and the upper rooms look grand."
This is a quote from the architect Augustus Welby Pugin in 1846. Our
school of St. Giles shares the same impressive length of history as the famous Church,
visitors to which travel from all over the world. Within months a convent was established
and certainly the first teachers were nuns from the Carlow Convent. For over 150 years
there has been an unbroken tradition of Catholic education on our site.
When one considers that pupils were learning their lessons at St. Giles'
before the days of the Crimean War then we put into perspective the dedication of
teachers, governors, and parishioners over the generations.
The school was all-age from 5 years to 13, then up to 15 until 1964, when
the Painsley Roman Catholic High School was opened. In that year, St. Giles' became a
Primary School catering for children from 4 to 11 years.
There have been many extensions and additions to the school buildings over
the years and inside it has been modernised in many wys, yet keeping the unique character
of our school.
St. Giles' can offer the very best Christian education, intellectually,
social;ly and morally in a disciplined, caring environment. With such a tradition and
positive outlook to the future we are proud of St. Giles' in every respect. |
