Netsuck - This valuable utility for all serious downloaders lets you enter Web addresses of files on the net and download them without wasting time waiting for the relevant pages to come down the line. Its free, compatible with Win 95 and NT and is a mere 231 Kb in size.

RealPlayer 5 - This is essential for playing back the latest RealAudio and RealVideo files. Costs about �18.80 and is compatible with Windows 3.x / 95 / NT & Mac. Size 1.3 Mb.

Gymnast - A text to pdf converter for around �20.

Hotbot - A brilliant search engine which reaches an estimated 34% of all web pages. Other search engines can't compete.

Yahoo - Still the number 1 search engine.

Webcrawler - One of the least popular search engines.

SearchUK - Small coverage as it focuses on UK sites. Avoids the long lists of U.S sites.

Excite - A very popular and important search engine.

AltaVista - Offers a wide coverage.

Lycos - Very popular.

Infoseek - very useful for finding commercial sites.

Metacrawler - Good for International coverage using most of the well known engines to ensure a good number of hits.

Yellow Pages - The Internet's yellow pages directory.

Mirago - aimed specifically at UK families and schools with family content filters.

Northern Light - very good search engine.

Free E-mail

Hotmail - the most popular free emailer, with five million users.

Yahoo! Mail - Offers other services such as Yahoo! Messenger which brings the latest Net news to your mailbox and Instant Mail Alerts that tell you when you've got new mail.

Mailcity - Reasonable selection of news services delivered to your In-box, including Wired news and unlimited mail storage.

Mailexcite - the free mail arm of the directory service, Excite includes the ability to send out auto-responses if you're going to be away on holiday for a few weeks.

GoPlay - Freemail with a bit of fun on the side. Humour, horoscopes, electronic greeting cards and more. Fast as well as fun.

Personal Electronic mail - One of the few UK-based free email services. friendly interface plus some free web space.

Net@ddress - Wide selection of Americanised blurb can be sent to your in-box. supports MIME attachments for both sending and recieving.

SuperNews - Refreshingly short on registration details, this service is good for newsgroup postings.

Coollist - If you've got lots of people you need to contact, Coollist is a useful service. It allows you to store your mailing list on its servers - and it guarantees not to sell details of your contact list.

Free Webspace

Geocities - 6Mb of free web space which you can put in any one of the 40 themed communities. The deal also includes the tools to create your pages. All Geocities ask you to do is include a banner ad for their service and a link back to the Geocities home page.

Fortunecity - Similar to Geocities this service runs a selection of themed areas where you can put your site. You get 10Mb of free space, use of web design tools and an email address.

Tripod - 5Mb of free web space. Using their tools you can build a site without any knowledge of HTML, all done through templates.

Informational and Educational

Ask a Librarian - This is a free service that works in conjunction with 34 on-line libraries in the UK.  The service helps you to find the answers to all kinds of questions.

News Digest - NewsNow supplies the latest headlines from leading news sources. It lists all of the current news headlines and archives those of the last few days. Articles do not, however, contain the full text. Clicking a headline takes you to the original news site.
