Clubs, Activities and Societies

Education is not confined to the classroom and much that is both valuable and enjoyable constitutes what are called extra-curricular activities.

Our school has many clubs and activities that usually take place during lunch time.

All pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities:

  • Voluntary Mass / Eucharistic Services
  • Justice and Peace Group

  • Outdoor Pursuits
  • Computers (I.C.T.)
  • Foreign Exchange Groups
  • Music - Recorder group / Orchestra / Choir / Boys Choir / Senior Girls' Choir Individual music tuition is available to those with a talent for playing an instrument or who show an interest in learning.  They also have the opportunity to play in the orchestra or a smaller ensemble.
  • Library
  • Drama
  • Gymnastics
  • Handwriting Club
  • History Club
  • Community Project
  • Technology Club
  • Environmental Club

"There is a very wide range of extra-curricular activities that effectively enrich the taught curriculum.  There is a large choir and orchestra.  The very extensive and successful programme of sports and gymnastics is a particular strength of the school.  Teachers give generously of their time and activities are very popular with pupils."

Ofsted, April 1997

Sporting activities include:

"The staff provide good role models."

Ofsted, April 1997

  • Basketball, Cricket, Athletics, Cross-Country, Netball, Rounders, Football, Rugby, Swimming, Hockey, Tennis and Badminton.
  • The Gymnastics Festival is held over two/three nights at the end of the Spring Term.  Over 200 pupils are involved each year.  The confidence, poise and skill of the pupils participating is most impressive.  They practise during dinnertime and after school as part of the Gymnastics Club.  The Gymnastics Festival is an outstanding event at Painsley Catholic High School.

Many educational trips, including visits abroad, are also organised.  These include:

  • Fieldwork expeditions, Ski-ing in Italy and France, Hockey trips abroad, residential retreat courses and many visits to theatres, museums and exhibitions.
  • The annual trips to France and Germany organised by the Modern Languages Department are for Year 9 and usually involve about 80-90 pupils and staff.  Such wonderful experiences enhance the teaching and learning of languages.

Painsley is particularly noted for its music, drama productions, gymnastics festivals and sporting achievements.

Painsley was awarded Beacon School status in 1998
