How are people's needs met worldwide?
One way of comparing how much needs are met or not is
by looking at statistics that tell us about population, food and health of a country.
Remember that this tells us about the country as a whole and not about individual people
or families in that country. The projects given in this pack look in more detail at the
lives of communities.
Unmet human needs
FOOD : One
person in five in the world is undernourished. Hunger persists mainly in developing
countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America and poorer countries of Eastern Europe
EDUCATION : In developing countries only two
out of three children eligible for primary education are at school. At secondary level it
is about one out of two children.
HEALTH : Half of the people in developing
countries have no reasonable access to safe water or basic sanitation.
