Readings

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew (11:4-6)
Jesus answered, "Go back and tell John what you are hearing and seeing: the blind can see, the lame can walk, those who suffer from dreaded skin diseases are made clean, the deaf hear, the dead are brought back to life, and the Good News is preached to the poor. How happy are those who have no doubts about me!"

"Kindness shown towards the sick and the works of charity and mutual help for the relief of every kind of human want are help in special honour.... and may be considered a sharing in Christ’s healing ministry.’ Pastoral care of the sick

Bidding Prayers

Bless all who are sick and fill them with new hope and strength. Lord, hear us.

Be with all those who care for the sick, especially those who care for elderly relatives. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Father in heaven,
grant the sick comfort in their suffering.
When they are afraid, give them courage,
when they are in pain, give them patience,
when they are depressed, give them hope,
and when they are alone,
may they be sure of the care of all your people.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Tuesday

February 10th & 17th

Time Out in the Upper Room all dinnertime

Readings

A reading from the letter of Saint James (5:14-15)
Are any of you ill? You should send for the church elders, who will pray for them and rub olive oil on them in the name of the Lord. This prayer made in faith will heal the sick; ... The prayer of a good person has a powerful effect.

This ministry is the common responsibility of all Christians, who should visit the sick, remember them in prayer… through words of encouragement and faith they can help the sick to unite themselves with the suffering of Christ for the good of God’s people.

(based upon the new rite of Pastoral care for the sick, 1983)

Bidding Prayers

We give thanks for the people who care for us, the hard-working doctors and nurses who make the world a better place to live in. Lord, hear us.

We thank you for our family and friends who care for us when we are ill. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord God, you are the source of all health.
Come to heal everyone who is sick,
that they may serve you in the world
and meet you one day in heaven.
We make this prayer in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Wednesday

February 11th & 18th
Feb 11th is Our Lady of Lourdes' day
and the World Day of Prayer for the Sick

Readings

A reading from the Gospel of Luke (9:1)
"Jesus called the twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases. …The disciples left and travelled through all the villages, preaching the Good News and healing people everywhere."

Part of the plan laid out by God’s providence is that we should fight strenuously against all sickness and carefully seek the blessings of good health. (Pastoral Care of the Sick).

Bidding Prayers

We pray for all the children who suffer severe and serious illnesses. May God fill them with strength and support them with love through their families. Lord, hear us.

We pray for all pilgrims, especially those who are looking for healing. Even if they do not find physical healing, may they find wholeness and peace. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Father, hear our prayers for our sick sisters and brothers. May all who suffer pain, illness or disease realise that they have been chosen to be saints and know they are joined to Christ
in his suffering for the salvation of the world.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thursday

February 12th & 19th

Mass at 12.20pm in the Upper Room

Readings

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark (1:40)
A man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came to Jesus, knelt down, and begged him for help. "If you want to," he said, "you can make me clean." Jesus was filled with pity, and stretched out his hand and touched him. "I do want to," he answered. "Be clean!" At once the disease left the man, and he was clean.

"Do not neglect your sick and elderly. Do not turn away the handicapped and the dying. Do not push them to the margins of society. For if you do, you will fail to understand that they represent an important truth… that weakness is a creative part of human being."
(Pope John Paul)

Bidding Prayers

We pray for all the people in the world suffering from AIDS. We ask that God will give them the courage and determination to cope with the disease. Lord, hear us.

We pray for the families of AIDS victims, that God may comfort them through their anxiety and their problems. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

All powerful and ever-living God,
the lasting health of all who believe in you,
hear us as we ask your loving help for the sick; restore their health, that they may again offer joyful thanks in your Church.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Friday

February 13th and 20th

Readings

A reading from the prophet Isaiah (25:8)
"The Sovereign Lord will destroy death for ever! He will wipe away the tears from everyone's eyes and take away the disgrace his people have suffered throughout the world. The Lord himself has spoken!"

"In death, life is changed, not ended". (The Roman Missal)

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for all those in our world suffering with cancer and other illnesses that threaten their lives. May God ease their pain and give them hope. Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for those who are dying. May they faith their death not with fear, but with hope and trust in God. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Almighty Father, we pray for all who are sick and needy,
especially those with terminal illnesses.
May their sorrow and that of their families
be calmed by the knowledge
that they will soon enter your eternal kingdom to be with you.
Help them through their last days on earth
so that they may not suffer.
We ask this for the love of your only son
whose suffering was so long,
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
