Readings

A reading from the prophet Joel (2:12-13)

Come back to God with all your hearts, fasting, weeping, and mourning. Let your hearts be broken, not your garments torn; turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in graciousness, and ready to relent.

We have never preached violence, except the violence of love, which left Christ nailed to a cross, the violence that we must each do to ourselves to overcome our selfishness and such cruel inequalities among us. (Oscar Romero)

Bidding Prayers

We pray for peace in the world, especially in Ireland. Lord, hear us.

We pray for all who work for charities that help people in developing countries: may their work bring fulfilment to the lives of the people they help Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Through every moment of this day: be with us, Lord. Through every day of this week: be with us, Lord. Through every week of all this year: Be with us, Lord. Through every year of all this life: be with us, Lord. So that when time is past, by grace we may at last, be with you, Lord.

Amen.

Tuesday

February 27th and March 5th

Eucharistic Service at 12.25pm

Readings

A reading from the prophet Isaiah (58:6)

The kind of fasting I want is this: remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free. Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor.

Half the world is starving; the other half is on a diet. We are not privileged because we deserve to be. Privilege accepted should mean responsibility accepted. (Madeleine L'Engle)

Bidding Prayers

Lord, help us to care for our neighbour and show your love to all people: through us let your light shine in the world. Lord, hear us.

Let your peace spread to the ends of the earth: let everyone see the signs of your presence everywhere. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Father in heaven, you have give us a mind to know you,
a will to serve you, and a heart to love you.
Be with us today in all that we do,
so that your light may shine in our lives. Amen.

Wednesday

February 28th and March 6th

Readings

A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians (3:12-14)
You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you. And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things together in perfect unity.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere (Martin Luther King)

Bidding Prayers

Lord, help all people to live together without war but in peace, and to love each other as you love us. Lord, hear us.

All-powerful God, help our government to decide what is best for the world of tomorrow. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

O gracious and Holy Father,
give us wisdom to perceive you,
diligence to seek you,
patience to wait for you,
eyes to behold you,
a heart to meditate upon you,
and a life to proclaim you;
through the power
of the Spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Thursday

February 29th and March 7th

Eucharistic Service at 12.25pm

Readings

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew (25:37-41)
"The righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'" The King will reply, `I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

A church that sets itself up only to be well off, to have a lot of money and comfort, but that forgets to protest injustices, would not be the true church of our Redeemer. (Oscar Romero)

Bidding Prayers

Good master, teach us to love you in our fellow human beings, teach us to serve you in our sisters and brothers. Lord, hear us.

May we respect the rights of every person, Lord, may we never persecute or pick on anyone. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

As we begin this day, Father,
help us to become Christ to our neighbours,
food to the hungry,
health to the sick,
friend to the lonely,
freedom to the enslaved,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Friday

Readings

A reading from the Gospel of Matthew (5:19)
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

We believe that there will be no real peace in our land until there is fundamental change. (Desmond Tutu).

Bidding Prayers

We pray for Maurice our Archbishop and all Christian leaders: may they speak out with your love and be strong in your truth. Lord, hear us.

We pray for everyone who works to help the poor and needy, especially CAFOD, and for those they help: may they be successful in all they do. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

O God, creator of light:
at the rising of your sun this morning,
let the greatest of all lights, your love,
rise like the sun within our hearts.
Amen.
