Reading

A reading from the book of Genesis (3:19)
You will have to work hard and sweat to make the soil produce anything, until you go back to the soil from which you were formed. You were made from soil, and you will become soil again.

‘Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which must look out with Christ’s compassion on the world. Yours are the feet, with which he is to go about doing good.’ Teresa of Avila

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for everyone who is doing exams. May God give them strength to do their best. Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for all those who are looking forward to new courses next year, and those going to university. We pray that they may make good choices and do what God wants. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord,

help us to realise

that success in life is not measured

in how much money we can earn,

or how many possessions we might have,

but in our service of others.

We make this prayer in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Tuesday

12th & 19th May

Reading

A reading from the letter to the Colossians (3:23)

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for human beings. Remember that the Lord will give you as a reward what he has kept for his people. For Christ is the real Master you serve.

‘The duty of making oneself a neighbour to others and actively serving them becomes even more urgent when it involves the disadvantaged, in whatever areas this may be. ‘As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’ Catechism of the Catholic Church

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for everyone who is unemployed and without a job, those who feel hopeless or aimless in life.

Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for everyone who is looking for a purpose in life. We pray that they may find hope in following what God wants.

Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord,

we will have many decisions to make in our time at school,

help us to put our faith in you

so that the choices we make

will be the choices you have planned for us.

We make this prayer in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Wednesday

13th & 20th May

Reading

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew (20:6)

It was nearly five o'clock when the vineyard owner went to the market place and saw some other men still standing there. `Why are you wasting the whole day here doing nothing?' he asked them. `No one hired us,' they answered. `Well, then, you also go and work in the vineyard,' he told them.

‘I feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But if that drop was not in the ocean, I think the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.’

Mother Teresa

Bidding Prayers

Lord, help us to be conscientious in all we do, however small or insignificant the tasks we do may they glorify you. Lord hear us.

May we realise that everyone has a vocation, whether they be a road cleaner or a priest, they are equally important in your eyes. Help us to value all who work for the benefit of others. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord,

hear all the prayers which we make to you,

and answer them for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Thursday

14th & 21st May

21st May is Ascension

Thursday

Reading

A reading from the letter of James (1:2)

My brothers and sisters, consider yourselves fortunate when all kinds of trials come your way, for you know that when your faith succeeds in facing such trials, the result is the ability to endure. Make sure that your endurance carries you all the way without failing, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

‘All Christians are called to act. For stating principles is not enough. To point out injustice is not enough. Prophetic cries are not enough. Words lack weight unless we all become responsible and act effectively.’ Pope Paul VI

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for everyone who has difficulties and problems in their work.

Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for anyone who find their work hard, boring or unrewarding. May God give them strength and hope in what they do, and may they have the wisdom to understand God’s will.

Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord help us to keep on doing what is good,

even if we suffer as a result.

We ask this in Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Friday

15th and 22nd May

Reading

A reading from the book of Genesis (2:15)

The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and guard it.

Have your tools ready: God will find you work. Charles Kingsley

Bidding Prayers

We pray for all those who follow different vocations. May God guide people to live out the jobs and careers he has planned for them. Lord hear us.

We pray that we may be ready with our tools, our skills and our abilities, to do the work which God wants of us. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord, you have a plan for our lives, guide us to know the route we should take and the careers we should follow. We make this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.
