Monday

Readings

A reading from the book of Acts (2:3-4)
The apostles saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.

Holiness isn’t about doing extraordinary things, but doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.
(Cardinal Manning adapted)

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for all those who will be leaving school this summer: that whatever their choices for the future, they may choose wisely and be happy in what they do. Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for anyone who is taking a new step in their lives: may they be able to keep old friendships as they make new ones. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Almighty God, your Spirit inspired the apostles to speak in many different languages. Give us the same Spirit, we pray, to help us to succeed in everything we attempt. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Tuesday

2nd and 9th June

Time Out in the Upper Room

Readings

A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (1:25)
What seems to be God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and what seems to be God's weakness is stronger than human strength.

No one can go three steps on the road to perfection unless Jesus Christ is walking beside him.
(R. H. Benson)

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for all who are taking A Levels and A Level modular exams. May they be able to achieve the grades they need for the future. Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for 6th formers who are making decisions about what they must do next in their lives: may God help them in any difficult decisions which they must make. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord God, help us to remember that your wisdom is so much greater than ours, that often it is hard for us to understand. May we never to think that we have all the answers, but realise that we always have a lot to learn. We make this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Wednesday

3rd & 10th June

Readings

A reading from the book of Psalms (102:1-2)
Listen to my prayer, O Lord, and hear my cry for help! When I am in trouble, don't turn away from me! Listen to me, and answer me quickly when I call!

The diamond cannot be polished without friction, nor a human being made perfect without trials.
(Chinese proverb)

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for everyone doing school exams, or preparing for them. May God help them to work their hardest and do their best. Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for anyone who is disappointed or upset because of a result which they receive: may God help us all to learn from our mistakes. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Dear Lord, hear the cry for help from everyone who is in trouble or need. As people realise that they cannot do everything on their own, please help them to achieve more than they can imagine. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord.
Amen.

Thursday

4th and 11th June

Mass at 12.20pm in the Upper Room

Readings

A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (1:27)
God purposely chose what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise, and he chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the powerful.

If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.
(J.F. Clarke)

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for all who have to set and mark exams: that they may mark accurately and fairly, so that God may bless them in all they do. Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for anyone who finds it hard to concentrate on revision: that God may help them to do what they need to. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

God our Father, you value the weak greater than the powerful, and the poor more than the rich. Help us to be weak in things that are not important, and to be rich in the thing which really matters: love of you and of our neighbours. We make this prayer in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.

Friday

5th and 12th June

Readings

A reading from the book of Psalms (23:1-4)
The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need. He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water. He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right paths, as he has promised. Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, Lord, for you are with me. Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me.

If God sends us on stony paths, he will provide us with strong shoes.
(Alexander Maclaren)

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for all who are doing their GCSEs. May God help them to work their hardest and achieve their best. Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for anyone who is worried or anxious about exams: may God be present with them and help them through difficult times. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Father, sometimes we feel that we are going through a deep darkness in our lives. Help us to realise that you are our Shepherd and will always care for us. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
