Readings

A reading from the gospel of Saint Matthew (11:28-30)
Jesus said: "Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light."

"Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else" (J.M. Barrie)

We bless you, Lord, for bringing us to this day; we thank you for protecting our lives and giving us what we need. Lord, hear us.

Be with us, Lord, as we work today - help us to remember that this world is yours. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

O Jesus, through the most pure heart of Mary, I offer you all the prayers, thoughts, works and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your divine heart. Amen.

If the Lord does not build the house, the work of the builders is useless; if the Lord does not protect the city, it is useless for the sentries to stand guard. It is useless to work so hard for a living, getting up early and going to bed late. For the Lord provides for those he loves, while they are asleep.

We pray for employers and ownwers of businesses, may they see their work to be sharing in the work of God in helping others and building a better world. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

A reading from the second letter of Paul to the Thessalonians (3:10-12)
While we were with you, we used to say to you, "Whoever refuses to work is not allowed to eat." In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we command these people and warn them to lead orderly lives and work to earn their own living.

Idleness is the enemy of the soul (The Rule of Saint Benedict)
