Prayers and readings suitable for the beginning of the school year.

Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday

Monday

Readings

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus said: ‘When you pray, go to your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you.’

"God is present everywhere, he hears and sees all, he penetrates even hidden and secret places." St Cyprian

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for anyone worried or concerned about homework or others tasks which they have to do.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Let us pray for friends and classmates: as we meet new people and make new friends may we see the face of Jesus in everyone.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Concluding Prayer

God, help us through this day
so that we may bring help to others:
Grant that: Nothing may make us lose our temper;
nothing may take away out joy
nothing may make us bitter towards anyone.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Tuesday

Readings

A reading from the book of Proverbs.
Learn what I teach you, my son, and never forget what I tell you to do. Listen to what is wise and try to understand it. Yes, beg for knowledge; plead for insight. Look for it as hard as you would for silver or some hidden treasure.

" Happiness is the art of making a bouquet of those flowers within reach"  Bob Geldof

Let us pray for everyone who is new to our school this term, that they may settle well into school life.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Let us pray for everyone who is worried about the new school year: may God protect and strengthen them. Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Almighty God,
with you there is no beginning and end:
in this new school year,
bring us many blessings
and may we grow closer to you.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Wednesday

A reading from the books Ecclesiasticus.
Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses. He sets the time for birth and the time for death, the time for planting and the time for pulling up, the time for killing and the time for healing, the time for tearing down and the time for building.

" One day, the artist Michelangelo saw a block of marble which the owner said was of no value. ‘It is valuable to me,’ Michelangelo said. ‘There is an angel imprisoned in it and I must set it free."

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for all teachers who are new to our school. Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Let us pray for everyone learning new subjects and following new subjects this year: may God’s spirit inspire them to do their best.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Show us Lord,
that there is a challenge in every situation
and that you are with us whatever happens,
ready to change ordinary things into wonderful things.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
