Prayers and readings about the need for human beings to look after the world which God has made.

Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday

Monday

Readings

A reading from the book of Genesis. (1:1,3)
In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth… God said ‘Let there be light, and there was light’

Praise and Thanksgiving. O Light invisible, we praise thee! O Greater Light, we praise thee for the less. (T.S. Eliot)

Bidding Prayers

We pray that God’s light may shine on the darkness of evil in the world, and bring good where there is trouble. Lord, hear us.

We pray that God’s light may shine on the darkness of troubled or frightened lives, to give joy and peace. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

God of life
God of peace
God of wonders
that will not cease
God eternal
Trinity
God everlasting
be with me.

Amen.

Tuesday

Readings

A reading from the book of Genesis. (1:10)
God called the dry land ‘earth’ and the mass of the waters ‘seas’, and God saw that it was good.

All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Water, so useful, lowly, precious and pure. (St Francis)

Bidding Prayers

Lord, we pray for all people who do not have a clear or an adequate water supply, and for all who work to provide water for them. Lord, hear us.

We pray for any people or regions who suffer because of drought, and the poverty and poor crops which this causes, especially when the problems are caused by the foolishness or wickedness of war or exploitation. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

God of Time
God of Space
Fill every moment
with your grace.
Amen.

Wednesday

Readings

A reading from book of Genesis. (1:11)
God said ‘Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants, and fruit trees on earth, bearing fruit with their seed inside… and God saw that it was good.’

All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Earth, our mother, who feeds us in her sovereignty, and produces various fruits with coloured flowers and herbs.
(St Francis)

Bidding Prayers

Lord, we pray for the earth in which we live. We pray that people may find ways of working and feeding one another without pollution and damage. Lord, hear us.

We pray for a fairer sharing of all the resources of the world, so that all people may receive all they need from the earth.. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Thanks be to the Father,
as we begin this day.
He gives us light
he guides us on our way.
Amen.

Thursday

Readings

A reading from the book of Genesis. (1:20, 24)
God said, ‘Let the waters be alive with a swarm of living creatures, and let birds wing their way above the earth … let the earth produce every kind of living creature in its own species: cattle, creeping things, and wild animals of all kinds.’

All things affirm thee in living: the bird in the air, both the hawk and the finch; the beast on the earth, both the wolf and the lamb; the worm in the soil and the worm in the belly. (T.S. Eliot)

Bidding Prayers

Good master, help us to care for all living creatures, and see them all as part of your creation, reflecting your glory. Lord, hear us.

We pray for our own animals, pets and working animals. May their loyalty and faithfulness be an example to us. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord, you are in this place.
Fill us with your power,
cover us with your peace,
strengthen us with your presence.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Friday

Readings

A reading from the book of Genesis. (1:26)
God said ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that creep along the ground.’

As the bee takes the essence of a flower and flies away without destroying its beauty and perfume, so let the wise person wander in this life.’   (The Buddha)

Bidding Prayers

We pray that human beings may see themselves as part of your creation, not something just to be used or exploited. Lord, hear us.

We pray for all organisations who work for the good of the environment and struggle against waste and pollution. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

O God, creator of light:
at the rising of your sun this morning,
let the greatest of all lights, your love,
rise like the sun within our hearts.
Amen.
