Monday

Readings

A reading from the letter to the Romans (12:1-2)

Don’t adapt yourselves to this present world, but let your mind be remade and your whole nature transformed. Then you will be able to work out the will of God, and to know what is good, right and perfect.

Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day: teach a man how to fish and he will feed himself for life. (CAFOD)

Bidding Prayers

We pray for peace in the world, especially in the former Yugoslavia and Russia. Lord, hear us.

We pray for all who work for charities that help people in developing countries: may their work bring fulfilment to the lives of the people they help Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Through every moment of this day: be with us, Lord. Through every day of this week: be with us, Lord. Through every week of all this year: Be with us, Lord. Through every year of all this life: be with us, Lord. So that when time is past, by grace we may at last, be with you, Lord.
Amen.

Tuesday

Readings

A reading from the prophet Joel (2:12-13)

Come back to God with all your hearts, fasting, weeping, mourning. Let your hearts be broken, not your garments torn; turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in graciousness, and ready to relent.

I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits. I believe that what self-centred men have torn down other-centred can build up. (Martin Luther King)

Bidding Prayers

Lord, help us to care for our neighbour and show your love to all people: through us let your light shine in the world. Lord, hear us.

Let your peace spread to the ends of the earth: let everyone see the signs of your presence everywhere. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Father in heaven, you have give us a mind to know you, a will to serve you, and a heart to love you. Be with us today in all that we do, so that your light may shine in our lives. Amen.

Wednesday

Readings

A reading from the Gospel according to Luke. (6:20-21)

Happy are the poor: the Kingdom of God is yours!
Happy are those who are hungry now: you will be filled.

At any time, about a quarter of the people in developing countries do not have enough to eat.

Bidding Prayers

Lord, help all people to live together without war but in peace, and to love each other as you love us. Lord, hear us.

All-powerful God, help our government to decide what is best for the world of tomorrow. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

O gracious and Holy Father,
give us wisdom to perceive you,
diligence to seek you,
patience to wait for you,
eyes to behold you,
a heart to meditate upon you,
and a life to proclaim you;
through the power
of the Spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Thursday

Readings

A reading from the letter of James (2:14)

What does it help someone if they say they have faith but not good work? Can his faith save him? Faith by itself, without good works, is dead.

Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care.

(Universal Declaration of Human Rights).

Bidding Prayers

Good master, teach us to love you in our fellow human beings, teach us to serve you in our sisters and brothers. Lord, hear us.

May we respect the rights of every person, Lord, may we never persecute or pick on anyone. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

As we begin this day, Father,
help us to become Christ to our neighbours,
food to the hungry,
health to the sick,
friend to the lonely,
freedom to the enslaved,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Friday

Readings

A reading from the prophet Isaiah (58:6)

The kind of fasting I want is this: remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free. Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor.

We believe this commitment to the poor is required of us by our Christian faith, which also requires us to look beyond a world that is fair to a Kingdom that is more fair. (CAFOD)

Bidding Prayers

We pray for Pope John Paul, Maurice our Archbishop and all Christian leaders: may they speak out with your love and be strong in your truth. Lord, hear us.

We pray for everyone who works to help the poor and needy, especially CAFOD, and for those they help: may they be successful in all they do. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

O God, creator of light:
at the rising of your sun this morning,
let the greatest of all lights, your love,
rise like the sun within our hearts. Amen.
