World of Chemistry
Every day chemistry (age 12-15)
The World of
Chemistry is a series of 15 experiment worksheets looking at how chemistry effects our
lives. The ideas here include emulsions, separating things, acids, and making electricity.
Each has instructions, an investigation page and teacher's notes.
| Give an example of something we call immiscible |
| What is used as an emulsifier in mayonnaise? |
Chemistry demonstrations (teachers of age 14-18)
See Chemistry I Resources
to:
| Make an alcohol breathalyser to demonstrate the reduction of dichromate. |
| Add acid dropwise to milk of magnesia the pH drops and then rises again. Good use
for a pH sensor, this one. See the Acid Base Demonstration Show the dramatic fluorescence
of chlorophyll in red light. |
| Make mystery putty using glue and starch. What does this teach? |
| Show the oxidation - reduction of indigo carmine. |
| Make slime using polyvinyl alcohol |
| Show the effect of surface area and reaction rate by lighting a cloud of flour. |
| Introduce acid and bases using this series of water-wine-milk-beer
transformations. |
Chemistry experiments and tips (age 15-18)
See Chemistry I Resources
| Measure the lead level of Grecian 2000 hair colour restorer which works by forming black
lead sulphide with amino acids in hair. |
| Measure vitamin C levels in tablets. |
| See a colourful oxidation-reduction reduction using indigo carmine |
| Prepare crystals of a complex salt of copper |
| Learn about Avogadro's number using cookies and soda pop. |
| Do an expt and put elements in their places to learn about the periodic table. |
| Exercise your knowledge on moles in this exercise about soda production. |
More chemistry experiments and tips (age 16-18)
See Chemistry II Resources
| Determine the molecular formula of a hydrated ferrous salt |
| Solubility of lead (II) iodide |
| Do a thermometric titration |
| Use the smell of raw onion as an acid-base indicator! |
