Making Materials

Salt and the sea (age 12-15)

A nice article explaining what a wealth of minerals the sea actually is. See The salt of the earth and wonder:

What are the most common minerals in the oceans?
How much gold is there in the sea? (Check your units)
Why does lead only last for fifty years in the sea, instead of hundreds of years?
Where did the salt in the sea come from?
In what way in the Baltic sea different from the Dead sea? Why is this?
Why is it useful that the mineral in body fluids of sea life match up with that in the sea?

Chemical-Producing Companies (age 15+)

For many years students have written off to chemical companies in the search for information for projects. This lists some of the many across the world:

Drugs - as in medicine Ciba, Hoechst
Oil producers who refine petroleum and make materials such as plastics from it Chevron, Mobil Corporation, Shell Oil .
Energy producers General Electric Company
