The Three Sciences
Of course, nowadays, there are many, many disciplines which call themselves science eg.
social science and mining science. There will, however, in most people's eyes only ever be
Biology, Physics and Chemistry. All others are in some way related to these underlying
major disciplines.
This area is dedicated to these disciplines.
Biology - The study of the life and structure of
living things.
Chemistry - The study of substances, how they combine and
their reactions (related to alchemy).
Physics - The study of the properties of matter and energy
(e.g. light, heat, sound, movement).
A Pause for Thought ...
It was possible only a few centuries ago for a scientist to have a very wide
understanding of almost all of science. Isaac Newton, Archimedes and Galileo were such
men. Today it is very different. It is very difficult for a single person to have a clear
understanding of one science, and I don't mean physics, chemistry and biology. These are
major disciplines. There are sciences within these disciplines. For example, cosmology is
concerned mainly with physics, but it is only a small part of physics. Stephen Hawking,
probably one of the ten most intelligent people alive today, admits that he does not fully
understand everything that modern cosmologists are now discussing. Scientific knowledge is
vast in the modern world and is progressing at a frighteningly fast rate.
