Science How?Often when we talk about our cultural heritage, we discuss the arts, architecture, music and theatre, but science is an important part also. The mythology, legends and stories from ancient history were the attempts of early man to explain his world and the universe around him. By at least 2000 BC men were starting to investigate how seasons varied and to think about why the stars moved in the night sky. The skills, knowledge and wisdom we call technology became essential to the normal life of people. Around 600 BC we see the beginnings of early science with a few scholars (Greek, Egyptian and Babylonian) starting to replace the myths with rational explanations. In the Middle Ages science in Europe stagnated and was eclipsed by Middle Eastern science. Copernicus and others brought about a Renaissance in Europe and science enjoyed a glorious rebirth. Today the amount of scientific knowledge available is vast. Science has been called the twentieth century's greatest art form. It is the foundation of our society. It's importance for our past and for our future cannot be understated. |
