Monday

Readings

A reading from the prophet Isaiah (35)
Courage, do not be afraid … your God is coming…he is coming to save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed.

Christian men, be sure, wealth and rank possessing, that you now who bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing. (J M Neale)

Bidding Prayers

We pray for all families, especially if Christmas is difficult for them because of financial problems or because the family is divided, or because they are remembering someone who has died. Lord, hear us.

We pray for all children, especially those who cannot enjoy Christmas because they are neglected or abused. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Be with us, Lord Jesus,
we ask you to stay close by us for ever,
and love us, we pray.
Amen.

Tuesday

Readings

A reading from the prophet Isaiah (40)

Prepare a way for the Lord. Make a straight highway for our God. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low …then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed..

Heaven cannot hold him, nor the earth sustain: heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign. (C G Rosetti)

Bidding Prayers

We pray for all shopworkers and anyone for whom Christmas is a busy and hectic time. Lord, hear us.

We pray for everyone who will have to work on Christmas day, especially people whose work means caring for people. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

God of power and mercy
open our hearts,
so that we may prepare for Christmas not selfishly
or with greed
but with generosity and joy

to welcome Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Wednesday

Readings

A reading from the prophet Isaiah (11)

On him will rest the Spirit of the Lord, the spirit of wisdom and insight, the spirit of counsel and power, the spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.

Sacred infant all divine, what a tender love was thine, thus to come from highest bliss down to such a world as this. (Edward Caswall)

Bidding Prayers

Jesus was called the Prince of Peace, so let us pray for peace in all the world. Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for peace in our school, in our homes, in our town and between all who we meet. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord God, we are looking forward to the birthday of Christ.
May we come to know the joy of salvation
and celebrate the feast with love and thanksgiving,
for he is Lord for ever and ever.
Amen.

Thursday

Readings

A reading from the prophet Micah (5)

You, Bethlehem, the least of the clans of Judah, from you will come for me a future ruler of Israel whose origins go back to the distant past, to the days of old.

Love came down at Christmas, love all lovely, love divine. Love was born at Christmas.
(Christina Rosetti).

Bidding Prayers

Let us pray for the Jewish people throughout the world, and for all people who live in Israel and near to the holy places. We pray that the Holy Land may be a place of peace. Lord, hear us.

Let us pray for everyone who has a position of leadership - for politicians and anyone who works in government - may they treat everyone fairly. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord, fill our hearts with your love,
and as your angel told us about the coming of your Son as a man
so lead us through his suffering and death
to the glory of his resurrection,
for his lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Friday

Readings

A reading from the prophet Isaiah (9)

The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light; on the people who live in darkness light has blazed forth: for a Son has been born for us, a son has been given to us.

What can I give him, poor that I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb. If I were a wise man, I would do my part. Yet what I can I give him: give my heart. (Christina Rosetti)

Bidding Prayers

As we remember the long journey which Mary and Joseph made to Bethlehem, let us pray for all travellers and all who are refugees. Lord, hear us.

As we remember that there was no place for them in the inn, let us pray for all homeless people, especially those who live in the cold on the streets. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Bless all the dear children in your tender care,
and fit us for heaven, to live with you there. Amen.

For the last day of term:
May the joy of the angels,
the eagerness of the shepherds,
the determination of the wise men,
the obedience of Joseph and Mary,
and the peace of the Christ Child,
be ours this Christmas and always. Amen.
