Readings

A reading from the Gospel of John (10:16)
‘I have other sheep, that are not of his fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd.’

‘Men become what they are, sons of God, by becoming what they are, brothers of their brothers.’ Martin Buber

Bidding Prayers

Father we pray for the Christian Church throughout the world, that it may share to the full in the work of your Son, revealing you to people and reconciling them to one another. Lord, hear us.

We pray for Pope John Paul and for Maurice our Archbishop: may they speak out with your love and be strong in your truth. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

God our Father,
bless your church with unity and peace.
Make it here and all over the world
a true fellowship of the Spirit
in which no distinction is made
because of colour, class or party;
a fellowship of love
in which all are really one in Christ.
Amen.

We pray for all followers of other faiths - Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and others. May all those who believe in God be able to live in peace and understanding, respecting one another’s beliefs. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord and heavenly father, through your Son Jesus Christ you have called us to be one in the family of your Church: give us the grace to break down the barriers which keep us apart; that accepting our differences we may grow in love for one another, to the glory of your name.
Amen.

Wednesday

Readings

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians (4:4-6)
There is one Body and one spirit as there is one hope held out to you by your call; there is one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; one God, the Father of all: he is over all, and through all, and in all.

Unity gives strength to the humble. (Latin Proverb)

Bidding Prayers

Lord, may all people grow day by day in the love of the truth. Lord, hear us.

May the divisions between Christians come to an end and may the Church be a sign to the world of the love of God. Lord, hear us.

Concluding Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles,
‘I leave my peace, my peace I give you’;
look not upon our sins
but the faith of your church,
and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom, where you live forever.
Amen.

Thursday

Readings

A reading from the Gospel of John (17:21-23)
May they all be one as you are, Father, in me, and I in you; may they be one in us: I in them and you in me, may they be completely one.

Let us be like the lines that lead to the centre of a circle - uniting there, and not like parallel lines, which never join. (Jewish Saying)

Bidding Prayers

We pray for all Christian Churches locally and for their ministers: May we and all Christian people may learn to love one another as you have loved us. Lord, hear us.

To crown all things there must be love, to bind them together and bring them to completion; and may the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, that peace to which all of you are called in one body.

The supreme reality of our time is outr indivisibility as children of God and the common vulnerability of this planet.
(John F Kennedy)

We pray for all parts of the world where there is hatred between different Christian groups - we think especially of Northern Ireland and parts of the former Yugoslavia - may Christians live as one Body, friends and neighbours in Christ. Lord, hear us.
